2 hour drive down the coast to the former French colony of Pondicherry, a town unlike any other in India with its leafy avenues and colonial villas and unique blend of Gallic and Tamil influences. Day 5: Pondicherry - Chidambaram - Gangaikondacholapuram - Kumbhakonam (250kms)

Day 7: Kumbhakonam - Tanjore (35kms/1hr)

Day 8: Tanjore - Karaikudi (110kms/2.5hrs)
Depart Tanjore for a 90 minute drive to the Chettinad region and check in at your accommodation in the village of Kannudakathan. Chettinad is home to one of the most unexpected subcultures within Tamil Nadu. The Chettiars are merchants who, during the 19th and early 20th centuries accumulated significant wealth as a result of their role as bankers and traders for the British Raj and other empires both East and West. Many families built huge mansions with this wealth and a few of these are now operated as heritage hotels. Day 9: Karaikudi - Madurai (120kms/2.5hrs)
Quite a contrast in store today as you journey is 2.5 hours from the slow pace of village life to the hubbub of Madurai, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. Of all the great temples of Tamil Nadu, Madurai's Meenakshi is perhaps the most awe inspiring and certainly one of the most active- it is almost like a town in itself, within the heart of Madurai city. Day 10: Madurai - Periyar (140kms/4.5hrs)
After breakfast depart Madurai and drive up to the steep road to Periyar which is famous for its spice plantations and wildlife sanctuary. Day 11: Periyar - Munnar (110kms/4hrs)

Day 13: Munnar - Kumarakom (190kms/5hrs)

Day 15: Kumarakom to Alleppey by Houseboat
At 12.30pm your private houseboat will pick you up from the resort. Start your backwater cruise in the narrow canals towards Alleppey. Through the South India tour package journey you can visit ancient temples, churches, paddy fields and can watch the day to day activities of the local people who live nearby. In the evening, the boat will be anchored in a local village where you can go for a walk or do fishing. All meals are prepared freshly on board the boat by your crew. Day 16: Alleppey - Cochin (70kms/1.5hrs)

Day 17: Cochin sightseeing

Day 22 & 23: Hospet
Two full days in and around Hospet with sightseeing of Hampi on the first day, which includes some of the interesting remains of the Vijayanagar Empire ruins, Virupaksha, Vittala and Hazara Rama temples, huge Ganesha and Narasimha images, the elephant stables, the Queen's Bath, carvings on the Ramachandra temple and Lotus Mahal. Day 24: Hospet - Badami (200kms/5hrs)
Drive to Badami after breakfast and check into the hotel. Badami is also known as Vatapi. It is rich with Hindu and Jain cave temples carved out of sand stone hills which dates back to the 6th Century. The Fort, on top of a hill encloses large granaries, treasury and a watch tower. Day 25: Excursion to Aihole and Pattadakal (88kms)
